Taught my kids a way to trick bad people. Most bad people assume everyone else has the same motives, so they'll believe you want to do x if they'd want to. E.g. a selfish person will believe you'd want to do something selfish.

Come to think of it, this works for any motives. I'd readily believe anyone would do something out of curiosity. But you don't need to trick people who aren't bad (unless you yourself are).

As a parent I would welcome an essay on this.

What if you end up tricking yourself. That is you'll make an impression of a very selfish person to a lot people you speak, even if you're not genuine about it. That's somewhat sociopathic tbh.

They say that when negotiating with Putin's Russia you have to frame everything you're asking for in terms of cynical self-interest, even if you actually have other motives. Otherwise they assume you're lying to them, and get suspicious.

That comes at a subtle cost. Now everyone knows that you are willing to lie about your motives just to analyze others. Lying is such a wormhole you’ll want to avoid at any cost.

It might be necessary to induce executive exhaustion first, because selfish people need to systematically pretend not to be selfish. Or one could go with the cognitive miser effect and make them simplify a problem to a selfish solution.

First startup competition pitch we did in front of VC judges had puppies and kids on the deck. The judges moved us to the nonprofit branch of the startup competition. Sharks think you’re plankton unless they see teeth (“move aside or we’ll bulldoze you” spirit in founders) Yuck!
