Many of the most important discoveries read at first like small tweaks to something that already existed. Often their own inventors initially thought of them this way.

It's easiest to parse something new as a delta on something old. But to judge an idea properly you have to project it forward in time, not back. Which is so hard to do that the only wise course is to reserve judgment.

That's why I hate it when someone posts something online and people put it down, saying it's not really new. This is not merely mean-spirited, but often factually wrong too. Whole new worlds grow from tiny deltas of novelty.

That’s interesting. Amazon comes to mind. What are some of your examples?

Most discoveries happen between disciplines now. Biology, Chemistry=Biochemistry. Entire new fields in their own right open-up. This is why an Odyssean education is more important now than ever. A pity one is not provided.

Facebook and Google are successful tweaks, but they aren't good examples of innovations that became tech leaps

Agreed. What seems like 10x improvement in retrospect would've looked like minor tweaks in their early days. Lots of examples come to mind - Favebook, Google, WhatsApp

mostly driven by the people (users) themselves. Basically when they start using a discovery, questions like “can you make it do that as well?”, “it would be good if it does that” helps the discoverer plot their future course. Most of the time no discoverer has the exact plan

While that may be true, don't you think that also promotes incrementalism at the cost of more innovative possibilities?
