I’ve seen the letters just get way larger when emphasis is needed. (Example: splat the cat.) Also my kid, 2, tells me I need to “use my outside voice” for those words.

I remember bigger letters and syllabification with hyphens and possibly exclamation marks to express that "IM-POS-SI-BLE!". (I hope there isn't any chidren's book that uses 'LOL' or 'so I was like' yet.)

chat apps + social networks don't support italics very well, but do support uppercase. makes sense that books would eventually follow the more influential mediums.

I remember giving up reading The Bourne Ultimatum in my early teens b/c I found the overuse of italics annoying. All caps would lose me sooner
