One factor that tends to limit the number of such people is the extraordinary amount of shit you get for switching to a new topic. "Being good at x makes you think you know everything" kind of stuff. Its virulence is surprising. I still don't understand it.
Or it may be that people don't feel that strongly about it, but it's just a convenient rock they can throw at you if you write something they disagree with. It's a pretty clever rock rhetorically, because the better you are at x, the more vulnerable you are to this tactic.

I've found being proactive at helping the reader understand my writing (addressing likely mis-readings) has helped me level up my communication skills more drastically than anything else. Incidentally, it's also something I've never been taught in any writing/english class.
