One factor that tends to limit the number of such people is the extraordinary amount of shit you get for switching to a new topic. "Being good at x makes you think you know everything" kind of stuff. Its virulence is surprising. I still don't understand it.

Or it may be that people don't feel that strongly about it, but it's just a convenient rock they can throw at you if you write something they disagree with. It's a pretty clever rock rhetorically, because the better you are at x, the more vulnerable you are to this tactic.

That's too bad. Is it possible to ignore it? I'm not well-known, so I've only gotten a little, and I find that deleting/blocking is good enough. I think your essays are great!

The idea of the Renaissance man has always appealed to me because it's exactly that. A person who doesn't stay constrained to one specialty but allows themselves to be open intellectually to multiple disciplines. That cross pollination forms revolutionary innovation

“Credshaming” - the act of shaming someone for speaking up about a subject where they don’t have the “appropriate” credential (eg Phd in X). Equivalent to ad hominem?

I feel that the generations that came before us, including some percentage of current generation, don't believe in interdisciplinary study. What was once Ford's idea for efficient manufacturing at scale has been adopted as individual identity of today's workforce. That's sad!

People who are sure a whole discipline is Doing it Wrong when they clearly have a novice understanding of it are pretty pervasive. Kinda makes you develop hypersensitive allergic reactions to anyone who looks like they're succumbing to Engineer's Disease.
