This chart captures the core of being a progressive. It’s not that folks on the (moderate) right are cruel; they simply get stuck somewhere between pity and sympathy, whereas progressives live in compassion land. While I'm on the left end of the spectrum myself, it can't possibly be right that only liberals feel compassion. It seems to me that the difference between left and right is more to do with their opinions about the relationship between individuals and the state.

Building people up is a more sustainable solution than helping them out. As a society we do very little of the former and government (where it intervenes at all) focusses almost entirely on the latter.

I agree with building people up, but I think public education is the best way to do this. Right now public education is broken; the quality of education is a sharp function of which county/municipality you’re born in.

Then the left allows the worst act of all against humanity. I was neither, but can’t side with a group that allows such an atrocity.

The biggest trick the left has pulled has been to convince people that those on the right don’t care about the suffering of others. My experience has been that many do care, and deeply so, they just have different strategies for how best to alleviate that suffering.

I don’t disagree with the latter part; I actually oppose a *lot* of progressive proposals. But the fact that the proposals almost always come from the left while the right simply judges them to me reveals a symptom of the degree of compassion.

I don’t disagree re: relationship of state vs individual, but I think ultimately that’s a manifestation of their degree of compassion; the more compassionate you are, the harder it is to not want a higher entity to carry out their acts of compassion. (cont)

Which of course as you and I know needs to be carefully balanced so as to not reach the extreme of Marxism.

After 30 years in US, I came to this political conclusion. The American Fallacy - Republicans feel they’re the more patriotic group. The Democrats feel they’re the more open minded group.

I always think the fundamental value distinction is “can you know what’s better for someone.” The liberal answer is “yes, and we can use that to improve their lives.” The conservative answer is “no, so leave people alone.”
