You could make a case that it's a step forward that our kids play with virtual toys (= video games) rather than physical ones. If video games hadn't taken off, maybe we'd be complaining kids were so literal-minded they had to have actual physical toys

A friend and I once told our parents we were studying for A-level French. We actually played Civilization with the language changed and only spoke to each other in French. Not sure they’d have approved but it did help develop a narrow set of vocabulary.
