You could make a case that it's a step forward that our kids play with virtual toys (= video games) rather than physical ones. If video games hadn't taken off, maybe we'd be complaining kids were so literal-minded they had to have actual physical toys

This is precisely what scientists say is bad: passive screen time, especially when the brain is still developing basic structures. Active screen time (games) is fine because kids have to think/act based on the sensory input. When watching TV they are just absorbing input.
