You could make a case that it's a step forward that our kids play with virtual toys (= video games) rather than physical ones. If video games hadn't taken off, maybe we'd be complaining kids were so literal-minded they had to have actual physical toys

But beyond physical activity, screen time means that so many kids never develop a love for reading books. That’s the biggest failure.

Pediatricians and child psychologists have spoken though about this. So being unsure about this bears some resemblance to anti-vaxxers.

Agreed. Screen time has helped my daughter learn a ton that she'd otherwise not learn so quickly, and not just in terms of knowledge, but in various ways. However, I'm concerned about eye health. I think that's likely not unfounded.

Games exposed me to critical thinking, strategy, and thinking many steps ahead (particularly PvP) that I probably would not have been exposed to at a Florida public school. Being a top player requires many of the same skills as things in real life and some skills can be xfered

Capitalism is gambling. Best to expose your kids to sound probability models and teach them to be long term positive-expectation investors and not degenerate gamblers

I run into a lot of parents who IMO overuse Netflix. You turn an episode of a kid’s show on, and it will play until all the episodes run out (and if you turn that off, it’s super low friction to keep watching). Pretty ethical monetization, still incentivises lazy parenting.

Yes, that worries me. They can sit there like zombies for hours if you let them. That surely can't be good.

There’s nothing wrong per se - it’s just that screens can be used as a soothing mechanism and so interfere with a person learning to work out situations and feel their feelings and be internally resilient.

I've tried playing FIFA with our 10 year old. He likes it a lot. But what he likes most about it may be how much better he is at it than me.
