Any optimistic project creates the opportunity to seem clever by cynically dismissing it. Fortunately (or unfortunately) most nerds learn this at about 12. By adulthood it has little effect on them.
There's a double-whammy there, because now the attacks can take the form: you're an expert in x but not y.
