What's worse is that systemic underestimation makes recognizing legitimate criticism much harder. It also induces simple, faulty heuristics - "everything has been invented" or "never listen to naysayers".

I think this stems from a simple cost benefit analysis - get social validation for criticism now (with a minor chance of penalty in the future), or bet it on an uncertain future outcome. A parasitic failure in the way we communicate.
