Wow, first time I've heard this articulated, but very true.
Any optimistic project creates the opportunity to seem clever by cynically dismissing it. Fortunately (or unfortunately) most nerds learn this at about 12. By adulthood it has little effect on them.

What's worse is that systemic underestimation makes recognizing legitimate criticism much harder. It also induces simple, faulty heuristics - "everything has been invented" or "never listen to naysayers".

I think this stems from a simple cost benefit analysis - get social validation for criticism now (with a minor chance of penalty in the future), or bet it on an uncertain future outcome. A parasitic failure in the way we communicate.
