Why should news be aimed at a random sample? I want news that's relevant to me, and I pick sites that match my needs. TechCrunch (if you think of it as a news site) has high-value ads targeted at its readers. You pick publications precisely because their articles are targeted.
That was the politest way I could think of to describe the people who click on ads.
