Unexpected benefit of international football: it greatly increases small children's knowledge of geography. Most of the countries my 6 yo knows about, he knows from their football teams. For him at least, Modric & Co literally put Croatia on the map.

they are building a geographical relational database, since a lot of clubs' names also include the city they are based in :)
When he was younger, he didn't distinguish, and he'd draw pictures of imaginary battles between e.g. Barcelona and China.
