    Unexpected benefit of international football: it greatly increases small children's knowledge of geography. Most of the countries my 6 yo knows about, he knows from their football teams. For him at least, Modric & Co literally put Croatia on the map.

        I can attest to this. Playing FIFA on Nintendo 64 growing up I learned the most obscure countries like Faroe Islands or small towns in Europe like Rennes or Bremen. Great positive externality!

        Totally agree. I've long found I can meet people from little-known countries and instantly strike up a rapport by listing off every footballer I've heard of from that nation.

        they are building a geographical relational database, since a lot of clubs' names also include the city they are based in :)
