When there's nothing that bugs me when I read it. I probably reread some essays 30 times before publishing. When you read something repeatedly, anything that seems off (whether it's an idea incompletely explained, or just an awkward sentence) becomes very visible.

Usually at least one of my rereadings is out loud.

Something I have always wanted to ask you is how you deal with “ship early” with your writing. You seem to do the opposite there. Do you consider writing as needing more care than software?

I ship early to the people I thank at the end for reading drafts.
