I'd have 2 open questions about the premise, still (1) do *universities* make a place an intellectual centre or is it rather a combination of industry/academia/politics/publishing (2) up to what degree can *physical* become irrelevant in this case

Cambridge is more than universities. The density of people dedicated to invention and knowledge exists nowhere else. Still the magnet for the reasons you listed 10 years ago.
