I think there's a distinction here between essential and inessential tools. E.g. I'm pretty sure the strongest lifters don't use the cheap plastic weights I had in high school; the best bicyclists don't ride $100 bikes; etc.

I see your point, but there are some exceptions. Baseball players from Latin America grow up playing stickball, which helps develop superior hand-eye coordination. Scarcity breeds superiority because it forces focus on fundamentals. It helps distill a skillset to bedrock.
