Likes have a sharper spike than they used to. Twitter must be predicting what people will like and showing it to them. But only till there's something else to show them. Which means from the consumer's POV, Twitter has sped up.

@paulg has posted/liked/followed etc. It can be annoying sometimes, but very few accounts I follow with pleasure. Yours is one of them.

It does show when a couple of accounts I follow - like the same tweet. It mentions "these accounts" has liked the tweet.

It can show up on the main timeline. Yes as creepy as it sounds. And to your earlier point in times of stress Twitter has made itself a reach out point to know what's going on in the world, I think that's where all the engagement comes from
