Projects that yield great results often wouldn't seem promising to a rational person. Fortunately some people have a compensating irrationality: they're so interested in the project that they'll work on it for its own sake.

This is a great reason to be a founder - and not be a founders employee. I find that employees in a startup also have to explain to the founder in this fashion - which is maybe why in many startups innovation can only come from the founder

Notice that AWS only made sense after CPU clock speeds stopped increasing exponentially. Before that point, who would want to hold rental inventory that became trash in 18 months?

Timing is key in startups. Airbnb and Uber became popular post 2008 recession when people really needed that extra income from their assets - houses and cars
