Projects that yield great results often wouldn't seem promising to a rational person. Fortunately some people have a compensating irrationality: they're so interested in the project that they'll work on it for its own sake.

This is a great reason to be a founder - and not be a founders employee. I find that employees in a startup also have to explain to the founder in this fashion - which is maybe why in many startups innovation can only come from the founder
