It will suck if the lesson the Democrats take from losing to Trump is that they should copy his "populist" playbook. (a) It's evil, and (b) they're too earnest to do it well anyway. You can't beat Trump in a race to the bottom.

What do you mean by “populist playbook”? Every definition I’ve seen so far makes it sound like a good thing.
The way the term is used lately to describe Trump and similar politicians in other countries, it means appealing to the worst instincts of stupid people.

It starts by not calling populists "stupid" "deplorable", and recognizing that people are angry. Immigration is just an issue through which people tunnel their anger... racism also part of it. Capitalism needs to evolve, next economic crisis / debt will be very bad.
