It will suck if the lesson the Democrats take from losing to Trump is that they should copy his "populist" playbook. (a) It's evil, and (b) they're too earnest to do it well anyway. You can't beat Trump in a race to the bottom.

AOC is the other side of the same coin, and it’s working for her. Speaks in big black & white statements that emotionally resonate with large numbers of people. Doesn’t worry about nuanced facts. I fear this is just politics in the age of virality.
She was one of the Democrats I had in mind. But although it may work for her up to a point, I just don't think she's unprincipled enough to beat Trump at it.

I hope you’re right! Otherwise scary times ahead. I find it very hard to tell whether a politician is using consequentialist ethics to justify populist means, or if they themselves are lost in black/white deontology.
