I constantly have the feeling that my 10 year old son is more experienced at being a 10 year old than I am at being the parent of one.

What’s remarkable is how different each of the siblings have been as the years progress. There are some similarities but it feels often times like every year is novel.

One of the great reoccurring disappointments of growing up is realizing the people we looked up to and taken as authorities didn't know much of what they were doing; and made lots of mistakes.

Disappointment or relief? If all of the adults were as mature and smart as I thought they were growing up then I would probably feel pretty inadequate in comparison.

Kids are finely tuned evolutionary machines designed solely to optimize their own objective function over time (often years) by probing and testing parental defenses. Parents have n objective functions (bills, job, dinner), only one of which is child rearing. We're doomed.
