Disgusted by the Republicans' adventures in culture war, the Democrats now propose to give us... class war. Hard to say which the historical precedents are worse for. The 20th century was basically a hard-fought tie in that respect.

Calling policy proposals “class war” isn’t a good look. What is your actual issue? That they’re proposing we go back to tax rates we had for most of the 20th century? An era of unprecedented growth....

Claims that the US had great economic growth despite high income tax rates in the mid 20th century conveniently ignore the fact that the amount of tax actually *collected* was about the same as today. pic.twitter.com/b3jBE9w3oO

That chart makes zero sense to your point....taxes comes from lots of sources. There are regressive and progressive taxes. The composition of taxes has changed. And again, it’s not class war, it’s a policy discussion.

The top tax bracket would be hitting the .1% not the 1%. Do you have numbers for that?

Numbers presumably exist, but I don't have them. However, since the difference between the official and effective rate was due to tax avoidance, and the .1% can hire highly skilled experts to help them in this department, I predict the difference was as great or greater.

Here's the most important chart IMO. (From a Piketty paper)pic.twitter.com/gMZu1rfENI

It supports an important point: that the tax burden on lower incomes is too high. But it contradicts the point you started with.

Which point is that? That there's a real policy issue and it's not class warfare? Can we agree that this a real discussion and the current tax system is not "fair" and discussing changes is a good thing?

Obviously not all talk about tax policy is class war, any more than all talk about immigration policy is culture war. But recently both have taken that turn. Which was the whole point of my original tweet.

But the source of income for the 1%/0.1% isn't primarily wage income like it used to be so the effective rate is irrelevant for them. They pay lower taxes on the non wage income that now composes a significant portion of their total income.

Need to see % of total income paid in tax across income percentiles. I suspect the 99% pay much closer to their "effective tax rate" than the 1% or 0.1%. Need to analyze returns data to get there though, not look at publicly available tax rate info.
