I say try it out. Yes there are horrible things on here but there are so many positives when you follow the right people. It's a source of instant little bursts of motivation and knowledge that you can easily consume multiple times a day.

When you're on twitter, you don't meet people that are not on twitter any more.

Not true for me. I'm an engineer in San Francisco and I meet about as many inactive users/ non-users as I do people who actually use it. I'm in the "recommend" camp. However, I am more bullish on things like secure scuttlebutt, decentralized social feeds as data infrastructure.
