1980s-style AI, where "dog" was a cons cell, yes. But I know nothing about the statistical type that actually works.

Oh, that ML. Not very. Strong typing seems to me one of those ideas like object-oriented programming that's great for certain problems (proving stuff about programs, and GUIs, respectively) but not as widely useful as its proponents believe.
