I would not advise founders to create such things. Not just because it's bad for the world, but also because you'll eventually lose all those users. Either something else will draw them away, or they'll develop social antibodies, as we did with smoking.
To be fair to Ev and Biz and Jack, they didn't mean Twitter to be like it is now. (Except for retweet-with-comment. That was a Faustian bargain.)
Before the native quote tweet feature, the way users shoehorned the function into Twitter was to reply to a tweet & put a couple characters before the @ sign, so their own followers could see the reply. Maybe part of fixing quote-tweet would make it like that, part of the replies
Surprised by the negative sentiment on the platform from my twitter follows. Wonder if it has to do w/ being a major contributor and/or public face vs. being primarily an anonymous consumer (me)
I think so--Twitter has a weird two-faced engagement problem in that new users find it confusing and lonely, while power users feel overwhelmed by responses.
The mistake was becoming a “media” company. Utility Twitter was promising ten years ago.
the problem with Facebook in particular is that when people are arguing or angry, it drives more "engagement", so more ad revenue for them. they truly have been blinded by money.
What causes this? Raising capital, establishment of board, growth over everything culture?
I’m inclined to agree that “growth obsessed” culture is the culprit, but I think the obsession w/ growth stems from the religiosity of Shareholder Value. We haven’t found a more elegant solution.

Two major flaws that are driving people to hate twitter: 1. Ad funded platforms optimize for “engagement” not enjoyment. 2. The design is more “spam” (unwanted low value messages) soaked than anything I’ve ever seen. I think solution to both problems is micropayments.
