One thing I've learned from Twitter that I didn't consciously realize before is that something can be simultaneously unpleasant and addictive. I was explaining this to someone, and the comparison that came to mind was checking a pimple.

To be fair to Ev and Biz and Jack, they didn't mean Twitter to be like it is now. (Except for retweet-with-comment. That was a Faustian bargain.)

Thanks for introducing me to the term “social antibodies”. Good to put a name to the concept.

ok so what you're saying here is: make something people WANT do i have that right?

I think the real insight is that if you’re just looking at metrics it can be hard to distinguish “want” from “addicted to”.

I agree! When Facebook added video it became unpleasantly addictive for me. Now facbook is no longer on my mobile

How do you evaluate Juul in this analogy? It’s certainly as addictive as smoking, maybe moreso. I don’t think any of its users would describe it as “unpleasant”. Are they the immunosuppressive mutation of cigarettes?

It's been a struggle for us too. It's very hard to prioritize DAU & decide what measure to improve which an addictive system wouldn't make better. Especially in education. We have customers who want an addictive educational site for children.

I feel like Instagram has become the canonical example of this to a lot of people. Interested to see what antibodies will come to the rescue.
