One thing I've learned from Twitter that I didn't consciously realize before is that something can be simultaneously unpleasant and addictive. I was explaining this to someone, and the comparison that came to mind was checking a pimple.
I would not advise founders to create such things. Not just because it's bad for the world, but also because you'll eventually lose all those users. Either something else will draw them away, or they'll develop social antibodies, as we did with smoking.
To be fair to Ev and Biz and Jack, they didn't mean Twitter to be like it is now. (Except for retweet-with-comment. That was a Faustian bargain.)
I literally got back on Twitter to get the word out for @SpeakUpAmerica_ and now I find myself on here too much. Kid you not, I don't know how there's so many startup founders on here... I legitimately don't know how they get any work done.

True. I’m torn between contributing time and effort to a thing, and wanting to delete this thing from my life forever. Unless something changes it will be the latter.
Interesting to think about. Even most 'pleasant' indulgences reach a point where there is an emptiness ("do I really want to spend 6 more hours gaming/watching TV/etc?") whereas with Twitter the novelty of the stimulation feels continuous (maybe because of the social aspect.)

Once, I unfollowed everyone and my feed was silent (except for ads and my own tweets). Follow those you care to follow and unfollow the rest, rinse and repeat.
I think it's always the case. do smokers, alcoholics, hard drugs, sugar (etc) addicts love the experience? I doubt it
