Perhaps at its infancy, but not anymore? Aren't referrals heavily favored vs. cold applications?

Referrals count for something, but I doubt they're more than a small percentage of companies YC interviews.

Fair enough. Seems that YC's weeding process would also limit these questions considering the relatively high bar for acceptance. I guess I thought companies getting past the interview stage would have these sorted out.
