      Paul Graham Retweeted Thomas Sowell

I wouldn't say I agree with this, but there is a whiff of truth to it. And I think it's worth trying to understand the point of view of people who feel this way, if we want to decrease polarization.https://twitter.com/ThomasSowell/status/1087410248531496961 …

      Paul Graham added,

      Thomas Sowell @ThomasSowell
"What do automobiles, guns, and home-schooling all have in common that makes the liberals hate them? All these things reduce individual dependence on the government and on the grandiose schemes for other people's lives created by liberals and imposed by government."

Perhaps a correct version would be "We want to be independent of the government. Cars, guns, and home-schooling increase our independence. But because liberals don't want as much to be independent of the government, they only see the downsides of these three things."

Still more correct would be to say that liberals and conservatives want to be independent of the government in different ways. (E.g. being a slave to medical debt is not exactly independence.) But now the ideas are getting too long for a tweet.

If you don`t go to the doctor you don`t go to the jail but if the government forbidden the use of cars and you use one you are going to go to the jail. Btw Thomas Sowell is a libertarian and not a conservative. Libertarian want to be independent of the government in all ways

Yes, it's still a bloody quote, sans context. Sowell has millions of words in print and on tape, spanning 6 decades. There's no reason whatsoever to do disassemble a quote that is unmoored from its source. http://www.jewishworldreview.com/cols/sowell073198.html …

The money don't give you freedom but give you more opportunities. "Being a slave to medical debt" is a free choose.

Well, around 2M years ago, our ancestors figured out that they survived better in groups rather than alone. We still haven’t completely gotten over it

Maybe Liberals are more afraid of an ungoverned society while Conservatives are just afraid of government.

The idea also presumes subsidiarity: that it is better for the individual to be heavily influenced/governed by the group that is one level higher (e.g. family, community) than several levels higher (e.g. goverment).

Governmental focus on public transport is bad for cars, good for individual freedom of movement of those who would depend on others to drive them. Public schooling aims to make up for differences in social background, increasing freedom of the inidividual child thereafter.

Being solely dependent on government for health care results in rationing (wait lists).
