I wouldn't say I agree with this, but there is a whiff of truth to it. And I think it's worth trying to understand the point of view of people who feel this way, if we want to decrease polarization.https://twitter.com/ThomasSowell/status/1087410248531496961 …

Still more correct would be to say that liberals and conservatives want to be independent of the government in different ways. (E.g. being a slave to medical debt is not exactly independence.) But now the ideas are getting too long for a tweet.

But there is literally not a "whiff of truth" to that. It doesn't even make sense. Cars, guns and home-schooling have externalities on the community. Externalities that have negative effects are what the government is supposed to work towards fixing.

It's just one of the sides. But yeah, one could say liberals believe that with government intervention, more people would be protected from illness, lack of shelter and food, without any action of their own. Conservatives believe if you want something, work for it, or die.
-
That's as much of a straw man as the original statement. No, conservatives don't want people to die. They want a somewhat different balance of personal and societal / governmental responsibility than liberals do.

Are cars opposed by liberals? What?

Guns increase independence?

All three can also impose externalities, which is why policymakers impose regulations. But it's not dichotomous. Everyone wants some balance of liberty and corrective intervention. Conservatives want more liberty than the status quo, while liberals want more intervention.https://twitter.com/ThomasSowell/status/1087410248531496961 …

Is there some way to quantify that conservatives want more liberty than liberals? Seems to me that the two groups tend to value the liberty versus intervention balance differently in different areas.

And when that "We" (all?) become independent of the government, what will the government be for?
