I wish my kids wanted me to read anything besides Wimpy Kid books at bedtime. They're ok, but I haven't been allowed to read anything else for the past several months, and at this point we have them all memorized.

It's not about the reading. I'd guess it's about the ritual of something which you always do together which always happens exactly the way they expect. No surprises => feeling of safety => easier to fall asleep. At least, that's how it worked for me at that age.
In this case it's not that. We used to read all sorts of different books. There's just nothing else they like as much.

Nothing else they like as much, or nothing else they like as much *right now*? "Bedtime rituals" was definitely a phase I went through (at roughly that age).
