I shadowed a reporter once who mentioned that they would put most of the information in the first paragraph and then go into more details because people are skimming and often don't get past the first couple paragraphs.

I guess magazine articles aren't really news though. They are somewhere between a news article and a novel.

Same here. I often search for how to [solve problem X with thing Y], then find articles with 2 paragraphs explaining what Y is, what the pro's and cons of Y are, how X might occur, and so on. Where the topic of the article is X in the first place. Infuriating.

How do you define the actual beginning? - the point of initiation of a logical statement/argument/narrative? Or the author's context?

And many modern books could be turned into a long magazine article. That is all I have to say but if an editor wants me to expand to 5000 words will do so for $500.
