I've tried this with code. It really works much better with languages that respect backwards compatibility. Memorizing some cool composition sucks if the language designer keeps changing the API. I'm looking at you python.

This is great. Another learning hack from math: understand the roots of the tree before leaves. Very useful to read all definitions and theorem statements in a chapter before the proofs - develops overall gestalt. Textbooks are not always topologically sorted.
