I have a good monitor and yet when I print things out and read them on paper, I always discover flaws I'd overlooked on the screen. This happens with both writing and code. Is paper better, or merely different?

If paper is better, perhaps one reason is that you can scribble on it. It draws edits out of you. Better still, the edits are tentative. Crossing something out is not as permanent as backspacing over it. Which encourages experiments.

I've always been the same, I think screen adds a degree of clutter that paper doesn't have

The screen is slightly distracting for me. I focus better using papers.

It is a function of the change of format, not that paper is better. I predict you'll get the same effect if you change your document formatting (font, colour, size, layout)

I notice effects of this type when I move an essay from vi to my site. E.g. I catch a lot of "the the"s that way. But not as many or as deep as when I print things out.
