If average American isn't able to calculate financial debt, why do you think that 'decent' developer would be? "The average US household carries $137,063 in debt while median household income was just $59,039, suggesting that many Americans are living beyond their means."

One would hope that a decent developer would be better at maths than an average American. Plus, technical debt is only superficially similar to financial debt.
