It seemed like something sites did to maximize their own traffic. Instead of sending you away, they'd keep themselves in the old tab, and just give you the link in the new one.

I usually right click on any link to make it open in a new tab just to be sure

I am damaged.. I always right click -> open in new tab on a bunch of posts... then the journey through the rabithole begins...

Try ctrl/command clicking on links, or clicking with the scroll wheel if you're on Windows or Linux.

Back in those days... 2007? Tabs weren't always tabs. Lots of browsers would open "_blank" links in new windows.
