To me, the feeling of being comfortable in your own skin is the hardest to attain yet most worthwhile kind of success. And it doesn't come from following someone else's precepts or schedules or ideas about how you should be living your life.

This contradicts itself. To everyone else who reads it, it's someone else's ideas about how you should be living your life. It would be worth figuring out how to say what you meant to. Not just to correct a fussy error; I bet the correct version would be more interesting.

I never get the "be yourself" concept. Most of what you define "yourself" is learnt from someone else at some point of life. So what is wrong in noticing something you don't have, and striving to get it?

Being comfortable in my own skin for me often implies that I’m not being challenged enough at that moment. It’s a nice part of the mastery cycle but really just a point on the turning wheel.

it sounds very simple to me. He feels great when he believes he's doing ok and manages to ignore others telling him he should be doing things differently. YMMV.

No, I think there is a real point here. There are some things you want to listen to other people about and some things you don't. It would be interesting to know where to draw the line. That's what kids don't get.

I know a smart guy who calls this kind of espousal "Blank Slate", or BS, for short. IOW, the tendency to take what-works-for-me or what-works-for-this-set-of-successful-people is necessarily generalizable.

I was reacting to that Inc piece about "successful" people getting up at 4AM. Because, of course, the definition of success is just assumed in that piece. And I was trying to say this: find your own definition of success. Don't allow the swirl to spin you out.

I really struggle with this. There are things I wish I was doing but I’m in a season of life that is very hard (working multiple jobs etc). I feel very unsuccessful some days and the idea of waking up earlier to become successful just feels like another chance to fail.
