It's not *really* the same game the pros play (NFL playbooks are a thousand pages long). It's a basic, essential version, which might also describe the math we want kids to do in elementary school.
By football, I mean what you probably call soccer. And that is the same game, at least as played by reasonably good 9 year olds in the UK.

I appreciate the response. It's unfortunate that your son's increased interest in soccer turned into a public indictment of math instruction. I get it, but it's complicated (of course!), and the work is hard *even when* the public is on our side.
