The thing that impresses so-called gatekeepers the most is when you've already started doing whatever they're believed to control the gate to. This is true of YC and I bet it's true of universities too. Few "gatekeepers" actually are, and no one knows this better than them.

That’s most of the thesis of Cal Newport’s “So Good They Can’t Ignore You”. Gatekeepers will rush to give their imprimatur to a winner so the reflected glory rubs off. That’s half of what the MacArthur Grant is. http://calnewport.com/books/so-good/

true of publishers as well. I got my book deal after I self published, and that book was successful

It’s also true about gatekeepers within large companies. Large companies are full of gatekeepers too and many teams operate like internal startups.

I don't blame them. They've experienced too many who just talk Blame on them though if they "keep the gate" out of selfishness and fear of loss

That is, when you've proved you don't need them. How much of this is because they are impressed and how much is inferiority complex?

I found this vague; the replies suggest that this is about publishers and distributors. Few have considered the risk/upside/punishment/reward structures for gatekeepers. If you were a record company — 90% of acts lose — you’d favor the acts built their success at lower levels.

What’s behind the gates is not success, but capitalization that may result in success of a magnitude or two higher.

well that's why you never stop learning. be the demiurge and you'll get past gatekeepers pretty easily. if you stop learning, you will become the new gatekeeper.

@paulg In a recent poll of 250 US college and university officials, not one school offered coursework in tools like Salesforce. We're building something to give people the skills to break into tech, without code (YC W19). More here! https://www.producthunt.com/posts/flockjay
