Interesting viewpoint. Are you suggesting students should learn how math applies to the bigger picture first before drilling down on the specific?
-
What bigger picture might that be?

I don't know about US, but in EU they first teach calculation before math, which makes perfect sense. So they actually do start playing with the ball, before doing the more theoretical things.

My 7yo learns a system where the = is the middle of a scale and left needs to be as "heavy" as right. Great intro to equations with variables.

Maybe they'll get lucky and have a one year pro athlete teach math.

I suspect the way it’s taught is harmful for kids that are naturally numerate
-
yes, it's very easy to "move too fast" for a student (or a client!) and overwhelm them. Part of the job of the teacher/consultant is dole out the info in the appropriate order, and pace. Reason: it's hard to learn *and* self regulate. Avoid: https://youtu.be/HnbNcQlzV-4

I suspect they’re teaching numeracy rather than maths.
