One way (admittedly not the best way) to find startup ideas is to ask what organizations would be good to compete with. Universities, for example, are dream competitors. They're so inefficient. But the best of all may be governments.

FWIW that's how http://laarc.io was born. It's still bizarre to me that no one on Reddit can edit story titles, and HN is rather specific in the content they want to curate. We'll see how long it takes for people to notice something new is waiting.

Organizational scleroticism and inefficiency are highly correlated with regulatory capture. Commercial banks, insurance companies, healthcare, universities, telcos, etc. This is why so many startups find themselves pushing regulatory boundaries or seeking clever workarounds.
