My 6 yo was so excited when he grasped how natural selection works that he makes me explain it to all his friends, like some kind of parlor trick.

How did you explain it?
DNA determines what an animal is like. You get half from each parent, but also a few mutations. The mutations either help the animal or don't. If mutations help you survive, you're more likely to have kids, who get the mutation when they get DNA from you. So the mutation spreads.
