Good point — Socialist & Communist countries definitely have the planning power, and are primed to have a tendency to carry out this kind of endeavor. Now that you brought this up, East Germany was a manufacturing powerhouse; Nearly 40% of the labor force was put into industry!

I don’t see any google grown by the State over here. Closest one is Yandex, which started and grew w/o any state and gov support for years.
