It is actually hard to understand. Darwin understood it, but his great champion Huxley didn't. Genes don't care about the species, or even the individual. And yes, I do think that ascribing motivation to genes is a useful way to think about it.

Genes have motivation but no intelligence. Computers have intelligence but no motivation. Humans have both (but both come from our genes, and you won't understand either without understanding our genes motivation).
