A pattern of I've noticed in the careers of the ambitious: work long hours when you're getting started (when you both can and must), and 4 hours a day when you're established (when you can't and needn't).

Not good, if it's such a complete change that you start from scratch. Ok if you can bring most of your experience with you.

And where is the balance of the time spent in late career? Community service / hobbies / leisure? As you said, both can't and needn't when established.
