A pattern of I've noticed in the careers of the ambitious: work long hours when you're getting started (when you both can and must), and 4 hours a day when you're established (when you can't and needn't).

Perhaps if you were extra-ambitious and lived super healthily, you could continue to work long hours after you were established. I'm not sure about that.

I've timed the amount of deep work I can really do in a day, and on average 4 hours is the point of diminishing returns. After that, I need to focus on work that requires less depth of focus.

What are the implications of that early to late career change?

Not good, if it's such a complete change that you start from scratch. Ok if you can bring most of your experience with you.

At what age do they become established, generally speaking? 40, 50?

What matters is that it is the right 4 hours worth of work.

Addendum to this would be - once folks are established, they preach that everyone should work less and concentrate more on family and social life.
