I used to use a browser to read news. Now I use apps. I used a browser to view video now I use apps. I used a browser to book flights and check in. Now I use apps. Trying to figure out what I will use browsing for in the future.

Interesting perspective. It follows that as we structure data, apps will follow. Then a good question to find the new great app is: "which data will/can be structured next?"

Interesting to look at the inverse: for app-first products, the long tail is in the app, and not yet on the web. Product teams often debate much can/should go to the web.

assumes browser wont become performant enough to reintegrate these use cases and come full cirlce. I use chrome more and more instead of apps, e.g., travel and news

It's not just about performance. On the web, a good browser's privacy/security policy can limit data collection by 3rd party
#JS. In native apps, ad SDKs can do pretty much anything. (even on same company's platform: big policy difference between Apple Safari and iOS native apps)

Or they just act as an easy to reach, bookmarklet that sits in close proximity, easy to reach when needed. I can't think of a reasonable reason for someone to use music apps/maps via m-website.

What do you think about progressive web apps, Paul?

Shopping. A lot of shopping is done via browser (including during lunchbreak at the office). That’s also why simplist is starting with a website and not an app :)
