Imagine the reaction on Twitter if Darwin published the Origin of Species today. It was bad enough for him at the time, but imagine what it would be like now. If he had an employer, there's a significant chance he'd be fired.

Today’s Darwin would be like the original Darwin. Someone with FU money, not dependent on grants, not dependent on employer. Hence affording to have his own opinions, no matter how unpopular. Being dependent and being original don’t go together.
These are good points. But if today's Darwin also resembled the original Darwin in hating controversy, that would be a problem. And his dislike of controversy may not have been unrelated to the quality of his ideas.

Most hate controversy. Darwin was tactful to avoid it. That is also a necessary skill for any original thinker.
